According to Social Media Report 2011, at least 30% of the marketers plan to increase their use of services like Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, etc. Even Facebook Deals provides mobile check-ins and associates them with deals and discounts.
The early adopters in this area seem to be the larger businesses. An example: for their 40th anniversary Starbucks randomly gave out 40$ gift cards to people who checked in with Foursquare.
However, smaller brick-and-mortar shops are starting to follow the same trend and they see it as a way to increase sales and potentially find new customers. Personally, I see services such as Foursquare to be more benefitial especially for the smaller businesses as it’s possible to increase sales while staying cost-effective.

3. Create a campaign – give out free goods for your loyal customers. They are also the most likely evangelists to tell others about your business.
